Thankfulness Challenge – Auburn Tigers

Today’s post is going to be short and sweet. I’m spending my evening watching my Auburn Tigers dribble a basketball with my family. See Auburn’s Basketball team is coming to town to play South Alabama in basketball. It’s rare that we get to see our basketball team upclose. Most of the games are during the week and the ones in Auburn are too difficult for us to get to. So we rely on TV a lot during Basketball season.

When we heard they were coming to town there was no question were we going it was get the tickets then we’ll figure it out. So today, I’m thankful I’m an Auburn Tiger and belong to a family that knows to spend our hard earned money making memories. It’s going to be fun and I can’t wait!

Thankfulness Challenge – Veteran’s Day

Today is the day that everyone’s time lines change to show their various military family members with a post on how proud of them they are, how they miss their family members, and how much they love them. People change their profile picture to their dad in their military fatigues or their brother in his dress blues, or a mommy soldier being welcomed home by their children. They post these long stories about their military family member and each one is really touching.

As you scroll up and down your various timelines pause and read what that soldier did and think about how his/her life, actions, and sacrifice has altered your life and give a like, a comment, or even just silently pray for him/her and their families. I can't imagine how hard it has to be to be a spouse, parent, kid, friend, loved one of a soldier gone for months or years at a time, much less that Soldier who doesn’t make it home or comes home but is forever changed by what they experienced, saw, did while on duty. I know today is the day we usually set aside to do all these things and that's fantasitc but maybe do it in Feb., or April, and in October too. These people deserve this love, respect, and support all year long!

Today, and everyday, I am thankful for those who put themselves in harms way everyday for me, I appreciate the sacrifice and salute you.

Thank you,
Marcy

Thankfulness Challenge – Growing Up When I did

I am forever grateful to have been able to grow up in the time frame that I did. I won’t tell you my age dear reader but I do remember when Saturday mornings were for cartoons. On nearly every channel. I also remember when you had to use a dial up connection and lord help you if you tried to connect while dad was waiting on an important call or worse already on that call. I remember the time before cell phones when we had to use payphones and when you told someone you would be there at 2 and you did cause there was no easy way to tell the other that you were gonna be late. That’s the timeframe I’m talking about. The time before cell phones and the internet and yes I’m only talking some 20-30 years ago in reality. Which is sad and scary at the same time.

Mostly I’m talking about that timeframe where a 300 pound girl didn’t try out for cheerleading and wasn’t praised for “showing people that the world doesn’t dictate beauty”. Or the special needs kid didn’t get to “make a touchdown” while all the other players just stood there so little Johnny could have his moment in the sun. Yes those are two fantastic things. Very admirable of the teams to let them have that moment and of the girl to have the confidence she needs to put that outfit on. Don’t get me wrong. What I’m talking about is that time when it was ok to look at Steve and say “you can’t be the lead in the play but we would love for you to help out with the scenery” and it had nothing to do with anything other than Steve not really being talented enough to be on the stage and it was ok to tell him that and Steve's mom didn't get the local news involved or start a campaign to get a teacher fired.

When I was in middle school I didn’t make the Volleyball team for 3 years in a row. One of my friends did. She was taller and able to block better than I could. I went to every game. When we got into High School I tried out again after spending a summer working on my serve. I still couldn’t block, I’m a short bitch after all, but I had the best serve on the team. One of the other players could block but couldn’t serve to save her life. So she’d come in and play the front row and when it was time for her to serve I’d come in and play back row. Then we’d swap out. It was a fantastic system really and I played Volleyball for 3 years until I hurt my knee my sr. year during a game and had to sit out. My point was not making the team forced me to find my nitch. Forced me to figure out where I best fit in and how I could help my team. I would have either figured it out or found another area to focus on. Kids today don’t really get that. Most school teams are now set up to everyone that tries out makes the team.

It’s not just sports however. Not everyone can be the jock, or the brain, and some kids are just there. That’s how life was back then and now everyone feels like they have to be special. My heart breaks for these kids that spend their days being video taped by mom and dad in the hopes they do something that “goes viral.” That little 3 or 4 year old who sits in those videos talking about grown folk business like a grown up makes me cringe. I wonder how many takes they made her do before she got it right. I also wonder how long it took mom to create that spontaneous cute rant that the little girls is giving cause I’m sorry but no she didn’t come up with that alone on the top of her head. She just didn’t. You know who I’m talking about ….. this kid.

What I’m saying is that these kids don’t get to be kids. They don’t get to run around the playground and make noise they don’t get to say something cute and walk away. No they are practicing and instead of running around to make noise they are running around to get that shot they need to get. Over the weekend I watched a video of a young boy on the potty (for the first time) and he was cracking his dad up. So mom comes in with the camera to recreate the moment. At this point the dad’s setting the little boy up to recreate the incident and is now at the point of laughing so hard he’s crying. The little boy immediately becomes concerned cause his dad is sad. He doesn’t understand the concept of happy tears. This was a great moment and frankly a funny video but the moment this young man and his father was having before he pulled out a camera was likely a priceless one. I wish the dad had stayed in the moment and just let it have been a moment.

However it was cute so ….. here ……….

Have a great Sunday ….

Thankfulness Challenge – I’m still alive!

Yesterday was weird. I woke up at 3am, which is becoming my norm after going to bed around midnight. At first I thought I had woken up cause of the dog next door but quickly realized it had more to do with the evil magic in my belly needing to come out. For roughly the next 30 minutes I hugged the porcelain God. I’ll spare you the details. Let’s just say it wasn’t pretty. When I went to bed the night before I was fine. I took a quick shower, trust me it was necessary, and climbed back into bed around 4:30. My alarm goes off at 5:30 and the worst headache I’ve ever had was in full effect. It hurt to blink. It was bad. For the first time all year I reached for my phone and texted my boss that I was going back to bed and wouldn’t be in (see previous post about sick days). I immediately turned off all my alarms and took some medicine and passed out.

It would be closer to noon before I’d wake up again. I was cold and achy and had no appetite at all. My hand’s kept going to sleep on me at random intervals. I spent most of the day wishing I could go back to bed. After trying to eat something at supper I climbed back in to the bed around 7pm and watched some stuff on my phone giving in to the sleeping pill I had taken around 9. Slept really good through the night until about 4 am today. Today I have felt much better. I got up helped around the house, cleaned out our pantry it was a good day. It’s not that I’m feeling better but I’m not feeling worse. If that makes sense. I still don’t have much of an appetite and while my head isn’t hurting nearly as badly as yesterday it’s like a dull ache. So I’m declaring myself well, but not 100% yet.

I keep playing I’m still standing in my head … thanks for that Elton!

Thankfulness Challenge – Sick Days

Today I’m thankful that I have sick days at the office, granted they are now considered PTO which kind of makes my blood boil but whatever the point is that while I don’t do it often when I need it then it is there and I still get paid for today.

Once I can look at a screen again without throwing up I’ll elaborate on this point but for now …. I’m thankful for Sick Days !

Thankfulness Challenge – Being a Celebrity

So when I started this challenge I downloaded several “blog post ideas” for those days when I was just spent and out of ideas ……. I never thought I’d have to use it this early in the game but one of the ideas was “What did you do to become a famous celebrity.” So I decided to start with this one but I’m going to put my own little spin on it. I wouldn’t be a celebrity if you paid me in Wild Cherry Pepsi. The amount of crap they have to put up with on a daily basis has to suck. I know it …. I get it they asked for what they have and they shouldn’t complain and all that crap but all that aside all they really did was be really fantastic as one thing and it can sometimes become a nightmare.

Think about it ….. This is a person who grew up enjoying singing or being out going and so acting is the area they were pushed into being on a stage and they loved every second of, well most of them did anyway. Then they got noticed and someone said hey that thing you love we can pay you to do it. That’s the dream. Having a job that you love and supporting your family at the same time. So of course yes let’s do that. But it’s never enough. You do a fantastic say 3 shows a month so let’s make it 10. Then ten becomes 30 shows in two months, and so on until that person is no longer having fun but now people are counting on them to keep going. Sometimes they find that spark that keeps the love alive other times they just go through the motions. Then at some point they have become so “big” they can’t even go see the thing that they loved such as going to a movie, or a concert or even the grocery store. Not to mention that no matter what they do it isn’t right. They go to a circus and get flooded with people telling them how horrible a circus is for animals.

My point is being a celebrity sucks. Yes it pays well, and they get to do what they love for a living but what I’m saying is it can’t be an easy life. To feel like you are always in a fishbowl has to be hard and sometimes depressing.

So there you go that’s my take on it, whatever I do to be a celebrity I hope it’s a fleeting 5 minutes of fame and I can go back to my life, with a little money in my pocket and a new car.

Thankfulness Challenge – Cooking

I suck at cooking. Don’t get me wrong I have a few things that I can cook and cook really well but for the most part I’m a disaster in the kitchen. I don’t know if it’s a lack of planning, a lack of focus, or if I just get bored half way through and half ass it but nine time out of ten I burn it, or under cook it, or both. Have you ever made a pot pie that’s burnt on the outside and raw on the inside …. Yeah I have.

I tried to make grits the other day. INSTANT GRITS. Cause it was my mom’s birthday and it was flooding outside and she likes breakfast for supper. So I tried to make grits, eggs, toast, and bacon. I burnt the bacon to the point where our house still smells awful and that was a week ago. So I found some sausage in the fridge and so tried to put that in a pan cause we had to have a meat. The grits never came together they were gummy and had far too much butter. The only thing that was really edible was the eggs and the toast. For once I didn’t burn the toast but by the time we sat down to eat it was stone cold.

My point is it’s amazing how “large” I am considering I can’t cook. The truth is I don’t eat a lot but what I do eat isn’t always “good for me.” It’s not uncommon for me to not finish my lunch, or dinner or whatever.  I eat a lot of fried food, and a ton of carbs . . . daily. You’d think that I would be concerned about it, but honestly, I often don’t think about my weight until I see a mirror or have someone point it out to me. I don’t feel large but obviously I am.

I have a doctor’s appointment tomorrow and if I know him there were will be a discussion about my weight, my blood pressure and other medical stuff I don’t understand when all I really need for him to do is refill my blood pressure medicine. On the way back to the office I’ll likely stop at Chick-Fil-A get some sweet tea and nuggets like we never had the conversation about my weight. The sad thing is I know that already yet I’m still likely going to do it. I may even stop at the new CVS nearby and get some chips and snacks for my desk cause the last few stressful days I devoured everything at my desk . . . . so yeah time to replenish the stash.

So today I’m thankful for my mom who can cook and kind of sad that because of it I’ve not learned to cook myself, oh well that’s what UberEats is for right?!

Have a great week guys!
