Thankfulness Challenge – DJ Nash

Tonight is another short post. It’s 7:30 my time and at 8 A Million Little Things will be on my TV on ABC. I can’t express how much I truly love this show. You know how some shows have an ensemble cast but like often the ensemble seems to just be there sometimes or completely non existent in some episodes ? Yeah A Million Little Things is not at all like that. Everyone brings something to the table in every single episode.

I will admit I started watching this show because of the amazing James Roday of Psych being cast as one of the lead characters. I have yet to watch anything connected with Mr. Roday that wasn’t great. So I was in from that moment. While Mr. Roday got me to the table the fantastic story telling by DJ Nash and his writers room have kept me there. Not to mention that amazing cast …. how they found this many talented people is beyond me. Incase you don’t know the show is about a group of friends who rally together to pick up the pieces after the glue of the group commits suicide. You’d think that would make for a super sad show but it’s actually a really lovely, heart warming, and funny show. Don’t get me wrong there are tears and challenges the group have to overcome but it’s a great representation of life in general.

The best part of the show is the online presence of it’s creator DJ Nash. He’s not one of those guys who created a thing and only tweets when he’s promoting the show. The conversations that he has with fans is almost as entertaining as the show itself. That’s actually the coolest part of this fanbase is the conversations that the show generates. Last year there was a lot of really productive conversations about suicide and cancer and this year the conversation’s that have resulted from the speculation of what’s happening on the show. Right before the start of Season #2 I saw a conversation where a lady had to miss the premier episode cause her daughter was hurt playing Volleyball. I too hurt my knee playing Volleyball in high School too so I reached out to her and have checked in on her daughter several times since. She’s recovering nicely incase you are wondering. My point is that this show has become way more than just a show.

Today I am thankful for the brain that is DJ Nash and the creative team behind A Million Little Things !

Anyway it’s nearly 8 ….. I have a show to watch and you should be watching too!

Thanks,
Marcy

Lessons of a fangirl

I am a total Bizzaro, but I find it super weird that I am not an isolated incident. My parental units produced for me a younger brother, I'm not really sure why either but still it's happened and it produced two pretty awesome nieces so it's ok. Even though my brother and I share similar traits we are polar opposites! It has always fascinated me that he and I were raised in the same house, by the same parents, went to the same schools, had a lot of the same teachers, being only 3 years apart we even had friends in the same circles.

So how did we become such a study in black and white? What molded me into such a special fucking snowflake?

We were allowed a lot if the same experiences but it's the way we respond to our experiences that began our different paths. Most of our responses are ingrained in us based on our teachings, likes, and our interests. And there lies our big differences. At some point mine and my brothers interests diverged and I....I took the fangirl path less traveled by, and that has made all the difference. (My apologies to Robert Frost). So while Ray (My brother who does have a name you know) chose normal more traditional interests, I fell into the fangirl life.

I fangirl most over tv shows, books, and movies, and when you submerge yourself in a lifestyle you take with you a few lessons along the way. What are some of them? Oh I'm so glad you asked I happen to have a list right here ....

§   Psych (tv show) taught me that having at least one really great friend can get you through anything
§   Doctor Who (tv show) taught me that it doesn't matter where you go, or when you go, or even sometimes who you go with, but that there is always an adventure to be had if you're willing to find it.
§   Scooby Doo (tv show) taught me that the only real monsters out there are people out for themselves, usually hiding behind costumes....working at carnivals
§   Horror movies (movies) taught me that sex kills. That running upstairs to hide gets you killed. That running into the basement gets you killed. Taking heels on a camping trip gets you killed. Having big tits and good hair gets you killed. Essentially just stop what you're doing, look around and realize only 1 of you is going to live.
§   Harry Potter (Book Series) taught me that no matter how unimportant we feel, we are always the heroes of our own stories
§   Shakespeare (Literature) taught me that it's a tragedy when everyone dies and young love never lasts, but that men dressed as women are always funny.
§   Star Wars (movies) taught me that you always need a good copilot when you travel. And even if nobody else understands, your best friend always knows what your saying. (C3PO & R2D2/Han & Chewie)
§   Kung fu movies (movies) taught me that with enough training, no matter how small you are, right will win over might.
§   Marvel (Comics and movies) taught me that even heroes can have a dark side and every villain has the potential to be heroic.
§   1970s Blaxploitation movies (movies) taught me to damn the man and fight the power!
§   Godzilla movies (movies) taught me that even though people may not like you because your ugly, loud and constantly tearing shit up, you just keep on being you and maintain the earthly balance. Also try not to stomp on too many villagers in the process.
§   Quentin Tarantino films (movies) taught me that it is impossible to overuse the word "fuck".
§   The Muppets (tv show and movies) taught me that although we may all be bizzare and we all have our own kinks (A pig and a frog? Gonzo and his seduction of chickens?), we can all come together with a semi famous guest star to create a beautiful song and dance!
§   Zombie (movies and tv shows) have taught me that some are fast and some are slow (I prefer the slow) but that usually trying to hold up in a mall never works.
§   Calvin & Hobbes (Comic books) taught me that to give a voice to the voiceless improves each and everyday. And that you should never get between a stuffed tiger and a can of tuna.

Ok..... So some of these lessons I've learned are practical some are not, I admit that. But knowing what I do, I could probably kung fu my way through a zombie apocalypse better than my brother and that makes me the better sibling. So I win. And in the end, kicking my little brothers ass is what matters.

Top 10 geekfessions

"Cleanse your soul.
Confess your sins."

Well that's a bit fucking dramatic. I received a paper in my mailbox with that statement written on it. I'm hoping it's some kind of clever cheap ass marketing campaign from a local church in time for crimmus. However, my tendencies towards paranoia lead me to believe I shall soon be tortured and killed by a madman who is offering me one chance at redemption.

Cleanse my soul? Maybe....
Confess my sins? Sure, why not.

Well lets see. It's been exactly....forever since my last confession. Good lord, there's no way of knowing how many times I've cursed, I've never killed a man.... So, puntos extra para que! I may have wished some negi juju on people, but they totally had it coming. I haven't built any idols of gold. Or even silver for that matter.

Um, yeah this is boring.

How about my geeky/fandom confessions. Now that I think about it, this seems a bit harder to admit out loud. I don't quite know what that says about me but whatever. Lets do this!

§   I really hated Avatar. Like really really hated it. I thought that movie totally sucked ass. Speaking of movies I hate, go ahead and throw Titanic and Forrest Gump on that list.

§   I have never seen an episode of Supernatural.

§   I can play a RISK tournament for days. Easily.

§   I love the show Psych. I loved it since the night I saw the pilot episode on tv. I have seen every episode so many times there is no possible way of counting how many times...almost. I never watched the last three episodes of the series. I've had them on my dvr for months but I have no interest in seeing the series end. So I haven't watched it end. I successfully avoided most spoilers, so although I can guess, I don't know how it ends.

§   While on the subject. I didn't want Jules and Shawn together on Psych. I like her character very much. But I loved the relationship between Shawn and his best friend Gus more. And sometimes true friendship is more important than trying to couple people off into romantic relationships.

§   I don't get Steampunk.

§   I can watch old dubbed kung fu movies and/or Godzilla movies for the rest of my life and die happy.

§   I like Star Trek but have only ever watched The Next Generation and some of the original series episodes. Same with the Star Trek comics. I've only read from The Next Generation line.

§   I've never played Dungeons & Dragons, pokemon, or WOW.

§   I cringe to admit this out loud. And I never have, for fear of the backlash of fandom wrath that will fall upon me. But I guess should I bite it due to the mysterious mailbox killer, it shouldn't go with me to the grave... I don't like the Doctor Who companion Amy Pond. She severely bothers me for so many reasons.

Whew! Guess I got that off my shoulders. Please be gentle when you judge me. Just remember that we all have our glitches and only the mysterious Mailbox killer can judge us.

DRAGON CON TIME!!!!!

WE ARE HERE!!!!!!! Golden and I and a few friends are sitting in our hotel, it’s the calm before the big geeky Dragon Con storm that is hitting Atlanta as I type. We have all checked in and we are now Dragon Con official.

There are some Newbie events tonight that we are thinking of attending just to see the lay of the land so that tomorrow we aren’t blindsided by the going-on’s around us. I am super excited that we are here. Not only cause it’s the first real vacation I’ve had in nearly 2 years, but because the people I’m with are pretty fantastic! So far the randoms that we've met are pretty awesome too!

As we unpacked Golden was showing her Dragon Con Swag Bags (get the details about the Geek Bags here) to us, she has some “80s themed” bags; a “So Pink” girly bag; a Psych  bag; a Gamer bag; Star Wars bags; and a Heroes themed bag. Some of the bags have t-shirts, books, stickers, chargers, etc., The girl has gone all out on these. We’ll start dropping them tomorrow morning after the “start” of the Con. So follow @theonlygolden for hints and tips on where to find these bags throughout the weekend.

Whether you find a bag or not I hope everyone who is here enjoys the Con and has fun, cause that’s what we intend to do.

ALSO remember as @wilw said before the San Diego Con “This is a good and necessary time to remind everyone that cosplay ≠ consent. Be polite. Be respectful. Don't be a dick!”
