Love Wins!

Today is an amazingly awesome day. Today is the day that LOVE won! Today is the day that common sense took over and we leaped over the fence of inequality. Today we made it possible for same sex couples to join in matrimony no matter where they live.

Today the White House looked like this.

When has that ever happened?

Today’s decision was long overdue and while it is exciting there are areas of this country fighting this ruling. I for one can’t wait to see my same sex couple friends walk down the aisle, something that wasn’t allowed where I live before. It’s always bothered me that I could literally go to Vegas, meet a random stranger, and be married by the end of the week and I have a friend who has been with his partner for over 15 years and they couldn’t even ponder the idea of it. We have televisions shows about people meeting and having to decide if they are going to marry by the end of the episode. The drama created in a show like this is what sells but the real life drama of every day couples taking chance on one another would be far more entertaining.

So today, I want to say congratulations to ALL couple out there taking a chance on one another cause at the end of the day that’s the core of what we are and what we do. Every day we walk out of our houses and rely on each other to get through our days. The fact that Marriage Equality passed will bring us all a little closer tomorrow and my believe is that eventually we’ll all be on board until that day let’s celebrate the wins while we can!

LOVE WINS!

Happy Father’s Day!!!!!

It’s that time of the year where we all stop rolling our eyes at our dad and celebrate everything he’s done for us, to us, around us, and with us. We post pictures of our dad’s through the years, usually a picture of us with our dad, and talk about what a wonderful human being/teacher/protector he’s been. Unless of course your dad was a deadbeat who left your mom in a cloud of dust one fall day and never came back, those guys they are bitter and want no part of this day, at least until they become a father then they celebrate it with gusto! So in an effort to breathe life back into this blog I’m participating in the obligatory Father’s Day post, join me by sharing some observations of your own father!

It’s ironic to me that I have two parents who are totally involved, totally present, and yet hate the idea of either Father’s Day or Mother’s Day. Both think it’s an absurd holiday not worth putting on a calendar much less the time and effort spent to celebrate it. See my mom’s dad was MIA most of her life. He was that dad that left when she was younger and never really looked back. She’s not sad about it … it was just her reality. I never met him and she doesn’t talk about him. My dad’s dad died when he was a pre-teen (or a tween as some call it now a days, not me mind you, but others who should be punished for doing so). So neither of them really celebrated Father’s Day growing up, it was just another day on the calendar and when my brother and I were born it was a foreign day to them. They aren’t stupid they knew the concept they understood the purpose it just wasn’t for them. Or so I thought.

Several years ago we were cleaning out the attic and I pulled down a box marked “KIDS” which I assumed were me and my brother not a box containing information about my dad’s other family. Full disclosure my dad has no other family but sometimes my over active imagination got the better of me when he was on business trips. I always assumed he left that family and came back to us cause we were cooler tho it wasn’t really discussed.  Anyway I opened the box and found years of handmade and bought Father’s Day cards with my name or my brother’s writing on the back of the card with the year. It was then that I realized that no matter what he said the day did mean something to him and thus the effort we put into it did too.

My dad didn’t miss much, yes he worked hard, often staying at work until well past nightfall and would have to go out of town sometimes but he made more baseball/softball/basketball/volleyball/tennis and even soccer games than most dads did, and I have the video tapes to prove it. He made both my brother and I “videos” of our greatest sports moments using “put me in coach” and synced it with the song. To this date it’s the greatest piece of ciema I’ve ever seen. :D

Dad also spent his vacations working around the house, which meant we worked around the house. I thought my dad was brilliant, he could do anything with his hands, from building furniture to doing electrical work. He often had us follow him around as he did these things I guess hoping that we’d learn how to do those things too via osmosis. He was not entirely wrong but the truth is we were more in the way than we were helping. He’d send us for this tool or another and sometimes we’d bring it back, but he always accomplished whatever with whatever we brought him. He is real resourceful that way.

My dad is also crazy smart about technology; he is the one who brought e-mail to his company. His boss told him at the time that “email was a fad” but dad insisted it was the way people would be doing business years from now. Now every employee in the company has e-mail even the summer interns, often before they are even assigned a computer. He can do anything to a computer, and always has the best technology available. Heck every computer within a 2 mile radius of him is eagerly waiting and is 100% compatible with Windows 10 all because of him.

The point is that like a lot of you I’d not be here without my dad and I’m glad I have the dad that I do, even in those instances where he is driving me insane with his views of politics or his ideas on “life.”

A Father’s Day post can’t be completed without Golden saying something about her awesome dad. Her dad is a lot like my dad he’s hardworking at work and at home, he’s knowledgeable about many things and is constantly doing things to make their family’s lives better.  I’m proud he’s a father figure in my life and I’m happy when I get to sit next to him at the table and talk to him, a rare feat actually cause he talks very little.

So Golden wanted to add this …

Thanks for always being my lawn care professional, my maintenance man, my squancher of bugs, my griller of meat, my fixer of cars, my weather man, cheerleader, my constant protector, my dad.

So to all the dad’s out there … HAPPY FATHER’S DAY!!! I hope you were celebrated in some way, shape, or form, and that someone else manned the grill for you today!

The Blog Is NOT dead....

I promise ... we haven't abandoned this blog, it just ... life keep getting in the way :( I've written several blogs in my head then have completely forgotten all about them, it happened again on my way home from work. It's like the blog seeps out of my brain through my ears and out the window as I'm listening to my favorite song on my way home. In my defense work has been crazy but I've used that as an excuse before and frankly I know what you are thinking ...

You wouldn't be wrong, I agree I suck, however I will say that googling "I suck" in an effort to find a picture for a blog posting is NOT something I suggest you do unless safe search is turned on. Then again if that's your thing ... enjoy. **NSFW** though if i have to tell you that ... then you really shouldn't perform that search.

It hit me today that we are nearing the 1 year anniversary of this blog in a few months and I still haven't found my voice. I don't know what to share with you guys and it seems stupid to be like

"I love Cheetos they are delicious"

Mostly because that's a waste of my time, your time, and the internet, also because that's not really a discussion builder. I never had this thought that this blog would take off like wildfire but I was hoping for a little more discussion happening, then again if we don't give you something worth talking about then that's on us. Or as you said previously ...

Again ... you would not be wrong though I do like the method you chose this time to tell me so. Etch-A-Sketch art is ah-mazing, google that it's a little safer. So once again I make the promise to you that we will be back, we will start posting again, and we will generate conversation on this blog or DIE TRYING!

For me I'm working on a sequel to my never ending Haley and Michael saga which I find myself thinking about all the time and until I get it out of my head and on a screen that will continue. When i say I'm working on it I mean I've opened the file several times and then starred at it for hours with very little written. However I'll get thee with it and when i do you'll get to read it .. if you are interested.

Golden is currently begging her body to just be a body. Her stupid body sometimes forgets it's side of the bargain on life and she has to man handle it back into submission. So when she gets back up and around, literally, I'll get her on another blog because unlike me she has found her voice and if you haven't read her posts you really should. They tell a story, teach some, and will make you laugh ... guaranteed. She's way better at this than I am and frankly I can't have that! :D

So until next time I leave you with this ....

... if nothing else I like to think I'm a better poet than Patrick.

Birthmonth Give-a-way

As I'm sure you all know by now (at least you should!) It's my birthmonth! I have to admit this month hasn't been as all out as usual because I have had a pet that has been severely sick and barely holding on to life since May 1st, so it's been kinda touch and go. But Ji-Jipus Gato (my cat) has been getting slightly stronger everyday and I hope it continues. So in order to get this party train back on the rails I thought I would do something that makes me happy....

Giving away free shit!!!!!!

Yay!!!!!

So I decided to do a twitter giveaway! Why twitter and not facebook. Because I can't stand Facebook and it's my birthmonth, that's why! I've never done a Twitter giveaway so I hope it goes smoothly, if there should be a hiccup due to my lack of knowledge, don't get all pissed off just remember it's free shit. Why are you so entitled?!

So the rules (always have to have rules) ... I'm not doing this to get twitter followers, but in order to win you have to follow me. This is so I can notify you by DM and we can keep your address and info private so your stalker doesn’t get your addy. But like, don't be a dick and follow for the contest then unfollow once it’s over. That’s not cool, especially if you win. I'm hoping to give away some things to people that have been following me and have suffered through my stupidity... And it seems kinda dickish to follow and enter just for free shit.

Anyway, In order to enter just fav the official tweet (that has this link) and reply to said tweet with "Enter me in the #MonthlongCelebrationOfGolden". You need only enter once. Please make sure you enter by 1am cntrl on 5/22/15.

I'm going real scientific with this give-a-way. I will be writing names on pieces of paper then drawing winners from a hat.... but like a real sexy hat. Winners will be notified by DM within 24-hours of the deadline.

Please realize that if you win you will have to provide me with a name and shipping address in order to receive your winnings. So if you are in witness protection you may want to rethink your decision to enter, then again you’ve given up so much you can get free shit just know I’ll know where you are. However you can totally trust me … I promise!

Please feel free to ask any questions. I'm thinking of selecting 3 winners but there maybe only two people interested, if so then I'm keeping the third gift cause remember it is MY birthmonth afterall!

Due to the nature of prizes, non-geeks need not apply, unless you non-geeks are ready to come to the darkside and get your geek on!

Let’s finish off the #MonthlongcelebrationofGolden strong with FREE SHIT!!

I’m disappointed

I have to admit that I’m disappointed in the lack of #MonthLongCelebrationofGolden tweets I’m seeing on my twitter timeline. It’s like Golden and I are the only ones partaking in this wonderful event and that’s a damn shame. Maybe you guys don’t realize the awesomeness that is Golden. So I thought I’d share just a few of the things that make her so awesome.

1.     She’s very loving, I mean really once you get to know her you learn that she’s got a heart of gold. She’d literally do anything she can for the people around her. She loves to surprise people with little things that will make them smile from a surprise bag of fun before a trip to leaving bags of fun for strangers. She’s truly amazing that way.

2.     She’s loyal as hell. She will follow someone to the end of the earth if she believes in the cause/person enough and does not require her to put on pants.

3.     She’s very knowledgeable about many different types of things, which makes a conversation with her endlessly fascinating. From the latest geekery to religion, to movies and tv shows, oh and books she’s constantly reading and thus her brain just continues to fill with both useful and useless facts that she can bounce off people at will.

4.     She’s funny, like makes me fall out of my chair funny. The way she tells a story paints a picture in one’s head that as a wanna be writer I long to emulate but often fail to do so. It’s really the only thing about her that I truly hate and envy at the exact same time. The worst part is she doesn’t really work at it it’s completely organic.

5.     She’s creative as hell. As an artist she is able to see things that other people can’t even imagine but she can not only see it she makes it a reality.

6.     She’s great at her job, it’s not an easy job and frankly not even one I thought she’d be interested in but she’s very good at it. She treats the people she takes care of like humans something they don’t get often by people.

Golden is at this very moment thinking about doing a twitter give a way so that she can share the joy of her BIRTHMONTH with the world. How can you not love someone like that. Someone who literally wants to take her moment and make it special for someone else.

So I want each and every one of you to start flooding her timeline with funny pictures, notes wishing her a happy birthday, any and everything you think would make her smile and do it now cause May 31st will be here soon and thus the end of her Birthmonth. We can’t have that day come without some fan fair.

Now follow Golden on twitter so that you can get in on her Birthmonth surprise cause trust me you are gonna want to be a part of that!

May gave us Golden thus we Celebrate

As you may have heard, May not only has flowers after April showers, it’s also the month that gave us the greatness that is GOLDEN.

I’m not saying she’s forcing me to write this, cause she’s not but seriously she would if she lived closer to me, but alas she does not. Frankly the only bad thing about our friendship is that neither of us have created a portal that would allow us to move back and forth between my house and hers, which is really a damn shame and I blame science. Then again I also think we should build a giant oscillating fan on the tip of Florida so that we can blast hurricanes back out into the Gulf of Mexico but no one wants to take that one on either. COME ON SCIENCE WHAT THE HELL !!!! GET ON THAT too!!!! I mean really what ARE they doing with their time, grant money, and talents. I believe that the portal needs to be a priority and would totally solve so many problems. Travel time would be shorter, so people would see more of the world; awesome things would become accessible to more people; Twitter friends could connect in person and no one would care about the price of gas…damn it always comes back to gas doesn’t it.

Wait …. Um…. This was supposed to be about Golden …. Must get back on track. You may be wondering why I’m sending this on the Month Long Celebration of Golden Eve well that’s because during the epic start of this holiday extravaganza (May 1st) I’ll be getting myself ready to go to New Orleans for the weekend. I’m going to Jazz Fest and it’s going to be AWESOME! The main attraction in Sir Elton John, but there are a ton of other great bands playing on Saturday, the only day that I can go due to an ever ending insane work schedule. By the way that’s another use of the portal, I could have gone to Jazz Fest when ever I wanted, I could go to a Broadway show, and Golden could join us for Jazz Fest. I mean if we had the portal we could see the man in his Vegas show, hell we could spend every weekend in Vegas, the possibilities are endless, but only if Science gets off their ass and makes it happen. Looking at you future nerds, this should be your cause, your focus.

Look at it .. it could be so pretty!!!!!!!

The point is I miss Golden, portal or no portal I am in serious need of a “Golden fix” sure we text, we tweet, we stay connected but it’s not the same as sitting and laughing with her in person, and goodness knows we laugh a LOT at each other, at others, at Lulu, at her nieces, just literally every moment spent with her is a good one for my soul. (too much?!)

So I thought with all these kids getting ready to graduate both high school and college I thought I’d give them the secret … We work to keep this friendship going far beyond the miles between us. See here’s what they don’t tell you, the friends that mean something to you, the ones that really count, you’ll make time for, you’ll make the effort to keep in touch. Those that don’t will become every once in a while friends that you talk to “when you think about it” or more importantly when “they” think about it.

Both Golden and I have friends from college and high school that we rarely talk to anymore, and I have made it my business that I don’t become that friend for her. With Golden working “non-traditional” hours we don’t have our 3 hour gab fests during the weekend like before, but now we text throughout the day, at night, on the weekends, and are forever connected by this device always in my hand/pocket. This is why my phone has unlimited data. She knows I am literally a text a way and more important I know she is also a text away. Sure we still talk every once in a while, sometimes you just have more to say than can be said in text, and now when we talk it’s literally about EVERYTHING from work drama, to family drama, movies/TV shows we’ve recently watched, books we’ve recently read (or want to read), literally any and every single thing is on the table and it’s not uncommon for both of us to have to charge our phones during the conversation or become dead to the world for hours.

My point is there are people in your life worthy of a 31 day celebration and Golden is definitely that person.

It’s not something I do for everyone but for Golden it’s not even a chore. Her Birthday comes once a year, the rest of the time she asks for very little but gives to many so I can take 31 days to show her how awesome she is and make her birthday the best one ever at least until next year.

It doesn’t take much, really any acknowledgement of her birthmonth is a win for her, so hit her up on twitter, you’ll be glad you did cause let’s face it no one can tell a story like Golden, don’t believe me, ask her about her big ass crack baby dog, Lulu, climbing up a tree to get a bird’s nest then being unable to get down Golden had to scale said tree and … well she tells it better than me. Ask her … you won’t be disappointed in her answer.

So over the next 31 days or so i'll post several times telling you just what makes Golden worth of this Month Long Celebration but sadly unless you really get to know her you'll never really understand it so hit that follow button and join the fun! @theonlygolden --- cause it's true there's not another Golden that even comes close to her!

Happy Birthmonth Golden let’s get this Celebration started!!!

My Birthmonth is coming....

May is my birthmonth! It's that time of year again, kiddos! That magical time of year where I act like a self indulgent ass for 31+ days!

My BIRTHMONTH IS ALMOST HERE !!!!

YAYYYYYYYY

My actual birthday isn't until May 31st but I begin my celebration on May 1st. Well May 1st if y'all are lucky. Sometimes it's leaked into April by a day or two. I've been observing my birthmonth for years now, but I've noticed the past couple of years that more and more people are recognizing not just their birthday but their birthweek and/or their birthmonth. Is it because I started this trend?

I mean, probably.

Ok. Honestly, probably not. It's probably because it seems that in today's society we all think we are each special and important and deserve all the attention. We are each little special snowflakes. Is this why I celebrate my birthmonth?

Not entirely.

It has turned into kind of a self indulgent joke. A way for my family, friends and I to take a serious situation & make it easier to swallow. Not too long out of high school I began to display strange health problems. I was in college at the time and spent alot of time in and out of doctors, specialists, and hospitals. At times I would go to classes through the week drive to Birmingham on the weekends to be admitted for testing sign out and drive 3hours back to college. Thinking about how I had to handle somethings then medically, really makes me realize how far we have come with our medical system. Sometimes (although rarely) I could get a doctor to issue a labwork order to a local doctor so I wouldn't have to drive for blood work. I even went into the university clinic to get labs drawn but before I could produce my medical order the local campus security had me restrained and handcuffed because Gomer fucking Pyle mistook my constantly bruised and needle beaten arms for drug track marks. From that point on I was too embarrassed and so made the drive every weekend. I was tested for anything and everything they could think to test for, by so many doctors and specialists that I soon lost count. They couldn't tell me what I had, only what I didn't have. Fucking helpful, I know. It was stressful, painful, scary and expensive. I began assembling my medical team of doctors. And after months and months and months of tests (routine and experimental) the only thing they were positive of was that my life span was limited. Me and my family were told I would be in a wheelchair by 25 and I "wouldn't live to see a 30th birthday".

I think my mom handled it the hardest. Everything became a potential "last memory". At this point it's probably important for you to know I HATE having my picture taken. Absolutely HATE! With all the fires of hell. But my mom felt that she need document every damn thing. We had to have cheesy ass pictures made because what if it was the last time she had a picture of the whole family? What if this was the last time you have an Christmas walking? What if this is the last time you and your brother are able to stand next to each other? What if this is your last birthday?

For the next few years as my health ebbed and flowed, my birthday became dreaded because it was one less year we were able to have together. My days were numbered and a team of extremely well educated and highly paid medical professionals had stamped me with an expiration date.

And fucking frankly I got tired of it.
So instead I revolted!

VIVA LA REVOLUCIÓN!

If it was going to be be my last, I was damn well going to enjoy it. Pack as much fun, as many activities and as many parties as possible into my day. Which quickly began to spread into days, weeks and then all month. Instead of having my mom cry for days leading up to it, I started calling her on May 1st, "Its the first day of my birthmonth, tell me happy birthday! Let's go buy something frivolous & eat cake!" May 2nd, call mom.. "it's the second day of my birthmonth! Tell me happy birthday! Let's go have our nails done!" And so on and so on. When my brother & his wife had kids mom wanted me to be able to make as many memories as possible with them, in case one day it was all they had left to know me by. So I started making my whole family (and Marcy whenever possible) go with me to the zoo for my birthday weekend.

Why the zoo?
Because I fucking love the zoo, that's why!

All this celebrating didn't really keep my family and friends from silently dreading my inevitable impending death but it did kind of create a way for them to deal with it. And it provided me the opportunity to instead of fearing death to celebrate life.

My body breaks down, tears up and at times absolutely was worthless. But meds and stubbornness are amazing bedfellows. 25 came and I wasn't wheelchair bound! So that birthday was a celebration! As 30 approached we celebrated harder each year because it was likely to be my last birthday. The year between 29 & 30 was like waiting any moment to fall over dead. But contrary to the expensive over paid, overly educated medical professionals I did reach the 30th birthday! And an entire group of people let out a collective breath that nobody was willing to admit we had been holding.
Since then, each birthday I have has turned from a sad potentially last ever, to a celebratory 'we made it' month long party. There are days that I feel like I can barely contain the pain within me and there are days that I barely have pain. But whichever day I'm having, I have surpassed my life expectancy. And that's worth celebrating.

So when it comes to my birthday I tend to go overboard. If you know me personally or follow me on social media, I am so sorry for my dumb ass self indulgence. It helps me and mine deal with serious life issues, but that doesn't mean that we can't celebrate. I can dance so I'm going to and I want everyone I know to join in. So until we all get sick and can't stand any more let's eat cake and celebrate!

Happy Birthmonth to Me!
